Security, rights and civil liberties for women

The US Consulate General, Mumbai, is hosting a panel discussion by women working in security, this evening at Mumbai Central.

Women’s safety, security and the safeguarding of their fundamental rights are all being frequently discussed all over the world currently, given the fact that several incidents that go against these rights are taking place globally.

The US Consulate General, Mumbai, is shining a spotlight on these issues this evening with a panel discussion on ‘Women security in India: Understanding your legal and civil rights’. The talk is being hosted as part of the month-long Women’s History Month being celebrated in the United States, and will be facilitated by writer and activist Aarefa Johari.

Panelists for the talk include Tiffany Williams, acclaimed human trafficking and labour rights specialist for the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), Audrey D’Mello, Programme Director at Majlis, Insia Dariwala, writer, director and child sexual abuse activist, and Shalini Sharma, police inspector with the Mumbai Police.

American fruit comes to Mumbai markets

For a month, Mumbai and six cities can enjoy fresh fruit from the US, along with sampling and cooking demonstrations.

Mumbai, and six Indian cities, are in for an American treat: the California Table Grape Commission, Pear Bureau Northwest, and Washington Apple Commission, in association with the Metro and Foodhall grocery chains, are celebrating a month-long US Fresh Fruit Festival in 16 stores across Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Zirakpur, and Pune. The promotion includes a special in-store display of US fresh fruits, sampling, and cooking demonstrations.

As part of the festival, Adam Branson, Senior Agricultural Attaché within the US Consulate General, visited the Palladium Mall Foodhall outlet in Mumbai. Sumit Saran, Head-International Food Business of Future Retail Ltd., and Keith Sunderlal, Managing Director of The SCS Group, were also present at the store for this event. An interactive cooking demonstration and a health talk session were conducted at the event by Naini Setalvad, a well-known nutritionist and lifestyle diseases management consultant.

About the event, US Consul General in Mumbai Tom Vajda said, “This festival is a wonderful opportunity for Indian consumers to taste and experience a wide range of American fresh fruits. India is an important and growing market and we are glad to have a partnership with Foodhall, which makes delicious American fresh fruit available across India throughout the year.”

Saran remarked, “Fruits like grapes from California, American pears, and Washington apples are now part of the regular basket of fruits that Foodhall offers and are available across their seasons in all our outlets.” Sunderlal added, “India is one of the growing potential markets for imported US fruits like grapes, pears, and apples and we are pleased to showcase these products to Indian consumers. We hope to create a market which becomes a repository of culinary knowledge and understanding, right here in India.”

This promotion is taking place at Metro and Foodhall stores until January 5, 2015.

Watch: ‘Kiss The Girls’

The 1997 thriller will be screened this afternoon at the US Consulate General, BKC, on a free-to-enter basis. Do not miss.

This evening, Friday, December 19, the US Consulate General at Bandra Kurla Complex is hosting a screening of the hit American thriller, Kiss The Girls.

Based on a book by the same name penned by writer James Patterson, the film stars Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Cary Elwes in lead roles. The film begins with forensic psychologist and detective Alex Cross (played by Morgan Freeman) going to North Carolina to investigate when his niece is reported missing from there. He finds out from the cops that his niece is one of several women recently reported missing. Soon, one of the missing women is discovered dead in a desolate forest. Almost immediately, police intern Kate (played by Ashley Judd) is kidnapped.

However, Kate is able to successfully escape from her kidnapper – she wakes up from a drugged state in a dwelling where a masked man is holding her, and probably several other women, prisoner. She sustains severe injuries while escaping, but when she recovers, she joins forces with Alex Cross to track down the kidnapper-killer.

The screening is part of the American Centre’s weekly film shows for Mumbai.

When softball comes to Mumbai

Exhibition softball match and special outdoor screening of ‘The Only Real Game’ took place at BKC on Saturday, October 26.

The US Consulate General Mumbai and Namaste America co-hosted an exhibition softball match and a special outdoor screening of the American documentary The Only Real Game on Saturday, October 26, 2013.  The event was held in association with the American School of Bombay and the Mumbai City Baseball Association.

baseballThis year, The Only Real Game made its Asian debut at the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF).  Previously, the film was named the best Documentary Film at the New York Indian Film Festival. In honour of the film, Consul General Peter Haas, President of Namaste America Atul Nisar, actor Prateik Babbar, filmmaker Kailash Surendranath, and other guests took to the field for an exhibition softball match.  Dave Thoudam, a young filmmaker and musician from Manipur opened the exhibition match by singing ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ in English and Manipuri.

After the match, the Consulate hosted an outdoor screening of The Only Real Game.  Among others in attendance were the film’s Director Mirra Bank, Producer Muriel Peter, and Indian columnist Anil Dharker.

The Only Real Game documents the work of a group of baseball-loving New Yorkers and two Major League Baseball Envoy coaches who team up with Manipuri men, women and children to share their love of the sport.
