Enter this talent show for the elderly

Umang fest comes back with a bang, announces a talent contest for senior citizens to be held in January 2015.
by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

We are heartened to see several initiatives – however small – being planned for and involving senior citizens in the city. This is one group of people that require recognition and applause in its autumn years, and any initiative that celebrates them should be roundly welcomed.

In this spirit of things, the Rotary Club of Mumbai Nariman Point and Rotaract Club of Rizvi Law College are coming up with ‘UMANG 2014-15 ‘, a talent show for senior citizens, on January 24, 2015. This is an annual talent show conceptualised and executed by Silver Innings Foundation since 2008, for seniors aged 55 years and above. The programme will be part of the Rotary District 3140 Service Week from January 23 to 29, 2015.

“We have been organising this programme since 2008,” says Sailesh Mishra of Silver Innings. “As there are not enough opportunities for the elderly to show their talent, the main purpose of this programme is to provide a platform for the elderly to display their talents. This is not a competition between the elderly, but a forum to encourage them to demonstrate their hidden talent.” The event is supported by Dignity Foundation, FESCOM Mumbai, HelpAge India, Harmony for Silvers Foundation, 1298 Senior Citizens Helpline, and The Metrognome.

Umang invites entries in one-act play, singing, a solo of group musical or dance performance, skit, mimicry, drama, or any other talent which can be presented on a stage. “We are restricting the number of acts to not more than 25,” Sailesh says, adding that the organisers are currently ‘auditioning’ potential participants over the Internet (via YouTube video links of their performance). The talent show will be held at Birla Matoshree Sabhagriha, New Marine Lines, on January 24, 2015 from 10 am to 12.30 pm.

Do you want to participate in the Umang Talent Show for seniors? Call 9987104233 or 9029000091 for registration and details. Seniors march for elder abuse awareness

As reports of abuse against elders in India surface, a walkathon organised in Borivali helps spread awareness about the issue.
by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

A recent report by HelpAge India painted an extremely grim picture of the state of senior citizens in the country – at an age when they should be enjoying their autumn years, as many as 50 per cent seniors (of those surveyed) complained of abuse from their families. A surprising finding was that apart from daughters-in-law and sons being perpetrators of abuse, even daughters were found to inflict mental and physical abuse on the elderly.

Elder abuse day walkathonThe report was released to coincide with the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which is observed on June 15 every year. To mark the occasion in their own small way, Silver Innings Foundation organised a walkathon comprising both seniors and youth at Borivali. The walkathon was flagged off from Dada Dadi Park in Veer Savarkar Udyan, near St Anne’s School.

“On the eve of the 9th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15, 2014 , Silver Innings  Helpline, a project of Silver Innings, in association with INPEA and Pushpa Maa Foundation, organised  a walkathon observing Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 14,” said Sailesh Mishra, founder President of Silver Innings. “Around 230 senior citizens and 30 youngsters participated for the 20-minute walkathon with banners and placards,” he added. The programme also included the singing of inspirational songs and the tying of purple bands among the youth and seniors.

Mumbai kickstarts India’s first senior citizens helpline

Silver Innings starts a referral helpline portal to provide information on all things that matter to senior citizens in Maharashtra.
by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

It is fast becoming a cause of concern – a burgeoning elderly population in India and very little senior citizen-centric infrastructure. But there is hope yet, as senior citizens can now get access to a host of services through a unique helpline.

SI helplineLaunched in Mumbai on February 16, 2014, www.silverinningshelpline.com will provide comprehensive information to senior citizens and their family members. “It’s our way of creating a ‘super market website’ where elders can get information and get themselves connected to everything they need to lead a happy and contented life in their silver years,” says Sailesh Mishra, President of Silver Innings, which is working in the field of elder care since 2008.

Launched with information primarily aimed at Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune, the helpline will carry contact information for emergency numbers, medical and fitness help, legal and financial assistance, special needs (such as support group bureaus) and social needs (such as clubs, tour operators, etc.)

The helpline is a joint effort between Sailesh, Ramaa Subramaniam, co-founder of Silver Innings and Dhanalaxmi Rao, Project Manager and experienced gerontologist. “We call upon elder products manufacturers and distributors, as also service providers to register with us to reach a target audience of 50+ years,” says Sailesh.

A match, 11 men and 11 boys

A team of young boys played cricket against a team of senior citizens – and lost! – in Borivli yesterday.
by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

At the very start, the younger team of cricketers was quietly advised to “take it easy” on their opponents – after all, the opposition was much advanced in years, with their youngest player 62 years old, and the oldest was 73 years old! But from the first over itself, the seniors showed the youngsters who the boss was, by claiming wickets in quick succession and bowling out the youngsters for 112 runs in 72 overs.

The country’s first ’16 v/s 60′ cricket match was played yesterday, where a team of youngsters (the team’s average age was 20 years) played against a team comprising senior citizens. The event was conceptualised by Silver Innings in partnership with Pushpa Ma Foundation and The Metrognome, and was held on the BMC ground near St Anne’s School, LT Road. The youth team belonged to the Silver Innings Football Club, an organisation that works with senior citizens and their families.

The jubilant seniors’s team won by 7 wickets and with five overs to spare. “We organised this event because we believe that our elders have the wisdom and experience to help and support the youth to bring the required change to create a generation-friendly world,” said Sailesh Mishra of Silver Innings. “We are happy to have organised this innovative programme for intergenerational solidarity. We hope to create awareness and sensitise the youth towards our elders, and what better than sports to develop this idea?” he added.

Observing World Alzheimer’s Day in Mumbai

Two Mumbai-based NGOs and a college held events for senior citizens at Borivli and Malad on Saturday. Here’s a roundup.
by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

If more opportunities are provided for senior citizens to not just meet others of their age group, but also those much younger than them, the results can be electric.

This was amply demonstrated in Borivli and Malad on Saturday, September 21, as the Silver Innings Foundation and the Mumbai Chapter of the ARDSI held interactive events and talks for senior citizens at Nani Nani Park, Borivli, and St Thomas Orthodox Church, Malad. Over 450 elders participated in both events, and responded warmly and positively to the informative talks, street plays by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) students, memory checkup sessions and the final laughter therapy session. “More than 50 per cent of the attendees were women,” said Sailesh Mishra of Silver Innings. “We even had brain games for them. Overall, both sessions were about 1.5 hours long.”

He added that the key collaborators on the events – Pushpa Ma Foundation and the Church – were excellent partners to have for the project. “The community, especially the church support for such awareness [of Alzheimer’s and dementia] will make a huge impact,” Sailesh explained. “More such spiritual organisations should be involved in India for creating awareness of social issues. It becomes easier for outreach.”

Mumbai’s observing World Alzheimer’s Month

A few Mumbai-based NGOs and colleges have partnered to organise a series of events and talks on Alzheimer’s this month.
by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

It is a disease that has ravaged millions of people over the years, and it continues its onward march every day, unchecked. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, and is known to affect a person’s memory, behaviour, learning and thinking patterns. According to alz.org, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States alone.

In India, too, the numbers of those affected by this disease is worryingly high. Even more grim are recent findings that the disease, though traditionally known to strike those in advanced years, is beginning to show signs and symptoms even in those who are 40 or 50 years old.

September 21 is celebrated as World Alzheimer’s Day every year. In our city, the NGO ARDSI (Alzheimer’s & Related Disorders Society of India) Greater Mumbai chapter and Silver Innings have set aside all of September 2013 for Alzheimer’s awareness, and the two entities are jointly observing Alzheimer’s Month. “The partners for the initiative also include SVT College, YWCA Andheri, Pushpa MA Foundation, St. Thomas Orthodox Church, Helpage India , Nirmala Niketan College of Social Work and A1 Snehanjali Assisted Living Elder Care Home,” says Sailesh Mishra of Silver Innings. “Currently, the street plays are in progress, which are conducted in a very attractive manner. The plays address real-life case studies and have an instant connect with the audience. Also, Ganpati mandals have been very supportive as they want to address social causes. This way, we are helping to spread the message with religious and cultural programmes and events,” Sailesh adds.

Some pictures from the street plays:

The month-long initiative aims to spread awareness about dementia and Alzheimer’s, their effects on both the patient and families, caring for the sufferer, how to know if it’s Alzheimer’s, and various other topics. “This will be done through a series of street plays, interactive talks, memory walks and interaction between experts, students, senior citizens, medical professionals and whoever is interested in attending,” Sailesh explains. The events are free and open to all, but with prior registration.
