Review: Apple A Day

A perfect day starts with this Khar eatery, where fresh fruit juices will gladden your senses and fill your tummy.
by Ravi Shet

Do you want to start your day with fresh vegetable or fruit juice or a combination of both? Just walk down the road from Amjad Khan chowk and enter Apple A Day, a little joint situated next to Olive Bar & Kitchen, Khar. The place has two red-coloured bar stools and caters to the health- conscious.

Founded by the Sakpal brothers – Kiran and Sanket – this place has completed two years this month and is famous in the area for its fresh juices, shots, smoothies and salads. They also serve customised preparations as per the patrons’ requirements.

Wheatgrass Shot_Apple A DayThrough their open kitchen, I got to witness the preparation of their Wheatgrass Shot (Rs 69, in pic on left) served in a shot glass – this was a good way to start the rest of the tasting. I next tried their Carrot-Beet-Ginger-Mint (Rs 69) and Apple-Pineapple-Spinach (Rs 150), which are excellent. The chopping and blending of fruits and veggies are done once the order is placed by patron. What I really liked is that if you ask for sugar or any sweetening agent, you get an instant ‘No’ in answer.

They offer free home delivery and juices are delivered in thermostat bottles – they ask consumers to return the empty bottles. Monthly plans for Fresh Wheatgrass Juice (Rs 1818) and Fresh Fruit Juices/Blends (Rs 2828) are available for the patrons who wish to start their day with healthy juices on a daily basis. In a span of two years, they have built a base of a good number of regular customers; be it doctors, models and fitness buffs.

I will be heading there again soon, to try out their Orange-Beet-Carrot (Rs 100) and Pomegranate-Watermelon (Rs 150) which are best sellers, from what I hear. Cleanliness, good service and a wide range of juices (without added sugar and preservatives) makes this place rank high on my list.

Laparoscopy is fast becoming the preferred option for surgery for several people; be in cancer or a simple cosmetic procedure, surgeons too, are looking for ways to use laparoscopy in their surgeries.

Mumbai recently got its own all-laparoscopy surgical facility at Khar. The Beams Hospital claims to be a pioneer in laparoscopic gyneac surgery, and was inaugurated by Niraj Manglam, CEO Beams Hospital  and founder of UK-based Nu Cosmetic Clinic, apart from Dr Mahesh Patwardhan, chief laparoscopic gyneac surgeon from London.

The center will deliver the entire gamut of services spanning across different specialties, including bariatric surgery, laparoscopic surgery, maternity, general surgery, gynecology, and cosmetic surgery. The facility has 18 boutique beds and is spanned over four floors, and includes three HDU/ICU beds.

The surgeries at the facility will be carried out using the 3D technology.

Vivek and Sunita Gupta’s decor and jewellery store at Pali Hill is an opulent tribute to Indian art and heritage.
by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

It’s a place that’s really hard to miss – located at the foot of Pali Hill, it stands behind a massive door that opens on knocking with an old-world brass knocker. Inside, its plush interiors take the breath away.

“We opened operations in September last year, and the response has been phenomenal,” says Amrita Kakka, Marketing Manager, The Big Door. “Most of our clientele comes from the nearby areas, and there is a fair smattering of expats doing the rounds of the store, too,” she says.

Presented by Vivek and Sunita Gupta, the store tries to make “art and grandeur a part of life.” Spread across 7,500 square feet over two floors and a big terrace space, the store houses Mughal, Nizam and Rajput inspired jewellery from Ravi Jewels, Jaipur, apart from precious and semi-precious jewellery, set in gold, silver and silver-gold plated metal, to Victorian, polkis and jadau pieces. The silver jewellery pieces are a huge hit with customers, says Amrita, since they are pocket-friendly and come in stunning designs.

Apart from these, the store also houses a huge collection of interior pieces. Interestingly, the highlight of the store is its washroom – a treat for the eyes, every item in there is on sale, too!

See the pics below for a glimpse into The Big Door:

Medha Patkar arrested from Golibar Maidan

Activist arrested from Khar site where slum dwellers are being evicted all day. Protesters allege that cops have thrashed them.
by National Alliance of People’s Movements

In a series of illegal actions against the urban poor in Mumbai, the city Police today came down heavily on Medha Patkar and a group of people resisitng the illegal evictions at Golibar, Khar (East). Other active local residents including Prerna Gaikwad, Ajit and 20 men and women have also been arrested this afternoon. Those protesting have been beaten up very badly by the police and goons on behalf of Shivalik Builders, in the presence of MHADA engineers and officials. The latest information is that at least 10 houses have been demolished at Golibar.

A posse of police vehicles and JCB machines are still at the place and the demolition drive is still on.

The bulldozers at Golibar, a 50-year-old slum, are once again out to demolish and evict the slum dwellers who have been fighting corruption and a land grab by Shivalik Ventures, in which the 2G Spectrum scam-ridden Unitech has a stake. In the past, the slum dwellers have repeatedly opposed and exposed the illegal acts of the private developers who are all out to grab the land. It was only after the expose that the Chief Minister of Maharashtra scrapped the two 3K projects.

Even now, as usual, no notice has been served on the people before the demolitions. The Bombay High Court had directed that the residents must be relocated to a good transit camp that is in a completely livable condition, and also directed that individual agreements with the residents must be registered. However, without following this directive of the High Court, the demolitions are continuing in a totally illegal maner. It is also significant to note that as recently as on January 18, the CEO of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), Nirmal Deshmukh, ordered a halt to the demolitions, but the same has started once again, with MHADA’s intervention.”

Update: The NAPM has demanded the immediate release of all detainees, and immediate action on the police personnel involved in the demolition drive. Another demand is for action against Shivalik Builders for several alleged illegalities and encroachments on the land by the firm.
