Delhi Pollution: It’s all social media is talking about

Social media is abuzz with discussions and opinions on the New Delhi pollution issue, with Twitter chatter being the loudest.

Voted as one of the most populated cities in the world for several consecutive years, New Delhi, India’s bustling capital, is facing some serious health risks too. Due to over-population and severe pollution, the city’s atmosphere is often hazy with smoke and fog.

This month, though, the air pollution has reached a point of severity that is out of the ordinary. On Tuesday, The Indian Medical Association (IMA) declared a public health emergency. They have advised schools to be shut, and for the public to avoid walking or running outside, as the air pollution is said to be hazardous.

In November last year, one million school children were forced to stay home from school, thousands of workers reported sick and long queues formed outside shops selling face masks as the Indian capital struggled with its worst pollution level in two decades.

2017 is showing similar degrees of danger, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) sitting on an average level of 400 and reaching over 700 in the early morning and during most afternoons. To put it in perspective, anything over 100 is considered dangerous, and 500 is the maximum AQI level. This means that even healthy people are at a high risk of developing serious respiratory problems.

Meltwater, the global leader in media intelligence, took to the (virtual) streets to listen to what the public is saying on social media about the health emergency.

Mapping the chatter

In a week, since November 1, the terms “New Delhi” and “pollution” have appeared together 1,965 times on online editorial media in India alone, and has received 2, 339 mentions across social media.

92% of the mentions were from Twitter, where the sentiment was 50% negative (only 2% positive and the rest neutral). “Risk,” “dangerous” and “health” were among the most used words when discussing the New Delhi pollution problem. Some citizens spoke about having a “scratchy throat” and “sore eyes” specifically since Diwali, held this year on 19 October.

“Runners” was also a hot topic being spoken about across social media platforms with 177 mentions this week.

The India Medical Association urged the iconic New Delhi Half Marathon, due to take place on 19 November, to be called off in order to protect runners, marshals and spectators from exposure to the thin and low-quality air. With even healthy people being warned not to walk outdoors, it’s been advised that it would be too dangerous to allow the runners to over-exert themselves, and urged the race to be cancelled for the safety of all.

Today, social media is an opportunity to gauge public opinion and sentiment. Meltwater believes that companies and individuals can benefit from these insights to better understand needs, contextualise them and then to improve company strategy.

Review: Titli

A superb directorial debut and excellent performances are just two reasons to watch this remarkable film about a dysfunctional Delhi family.

This is a film that takes you to the narrow bylanes of Delhi, with its small, packed houses. One of these houses belongs to Titli (Shashank Arora) and his family of car-jackers. Titli is desperate to escape from his criminal family and plans to invest money in a shopping mall parking lot.

Vikram (Ranvir Shorey) is Titli’s oldest brother; he is abusive and short tempered, and his wife and daughter leave him because of this. Pradeep aka Bawla (Amit Sial) is the second brother who is often the mediator between Vikram and Titli, while their father (Lalit Behl) is the silent type, maintaining his peace with a cup of tea even in the midst of huge fights between brothers – stepping in only to give wicked suggestions.

Titli is a part of their newest car-jacking plan; he asks for a lift from a car that slows down but does not stop. Vikram and Bawla ride past on a scooter, intercept the car and break the windshield before Bawla and Titli flee with it. However, the car soon meets with an accident near a police check post, but the duo is released after they bribe the cops. Titli soon discovers that Rs 3 lakh is missing from his bag; this is the first time his brothers hear of the money and they realise that Titli is saving up to escape them.

 

Instead, they persuade him to get married – they reason that a woman can be useful to their work in conning people. Titli soon marries Neelu (Shivani Raghuvanshi) who is in love with a married man, Prince (Prashant Singh). Titli tells Neelu that he will help her unite with Prince – but first, she must hand over her fixed deposit money. She agrees.

First time director Kanu Behl impresses with his tight grip on the subject and shines a spotlight on the realities of families that are driven by the lust of money and harmful to their own. Debutants Shashank Arora and Shivani Raghuvanshi are confident, while the best performances come from Ranvir Shorey and Amit Sial. Without a doubt, this is one of the best films released this year – it will stay with you long after you leave the cinema hall.

Jazz on, Delhi!

Jazz concert this evening will not just present musicians from Manhattan, but will also talk about the history of jazz.

Delhi has the chance to get all jazzy this evening, Sunday, August 9.

Jazzaddicts bring to the national capital an evening of jazz with a ‘Back to the future’ concert headlined by Rajeev Raja (Jazz and fusion flautist) accompanied by international jazz musicians, all the way from Manhattan, New York. The concert is being organised at Qla, Delhi today, August 9, 2015. Jazzaddicts in an attempt to revive the original sounds of Jazz (sounds of foot stomping, swinging Jazz music) to which one can dance and snap one’s fingers.

This concert will combine performance with presentation, with a power point presentation that outlines the evolution of jazz from its beginning to the modern days live on stage. Rajeev Raja will present the history of jazz using a laptop and a giant screen. Meanwhile, the Manhattan musicians will perform jazz music from different eras. A band member said, “We are indebted to Jazz for the impact it has had on our development as musicians. The least we can do is spread awareness of this sublime form of music.”

Their most recent performance was to a packed house at the NCPA Experimental theatre in Mumbai. It took the audience by storm, as it was both incredibly informative and widely entertaining.

A business in weddings

Tarun Sarda came up with the unique idea of hosting exhibitions that allowed for the entire wedding shopping under one roof.

India is currently witnessing a wave of start-ups, of all forms. Whether IT-based or home baking based, whether large or miniscule in scope, we’re seeing a start-up revolution like no other. Bolstered by the growth of technology and people’s fondness for transacting over the mobile phone, many start-ups are doing steady business.

Tarun Sarda..Tarun Sarda embarked on his start-up journey way back in 1992, when he started an agency that produced ad designs and catalogues, with a seed capita of Rs 5,000. In 1998, he helmed Vintage Publications that published Celebrating Vivaha and Timeless Jewels. The magazines were an instant hit, as were the concurrent road shows, which prompted him to launch the first Vivaha exhibition in 2003 in Delhi, followed by Timeless Jewels in 2004.

In 2002, he won the WYBA (World Young Business Achiever) award in Manila for Entrepreneurial Management where he first shared his vision for the Celebrating Vivaha exhibitions – he believed that weddings in India were recession-proof and forever growing. 2003 saw the launch of Celebrating Vivaha exhibitions in New Delhi and Mumbai.

The Vivaha Luxury Homes – a specialised exhibition on high-end interiors – followed soon after. The unparalleled growth of the wedding industry prompted Tarun to launch the Vivaha Pre-Wedding Solutions, an exhibition for back-end wedding service providers.

Today, Tarun Sarda is the man behind some of the most recognized and well attended exhibitions that take place in various parts of the country – Celebrating Vivaha, Timeless Jewels, Vivaha Luxury Homes, Vivaha Pre-Wedding Solutions and LIFE (the Lifestyle, Indulgence and Fashion Exposition). His business has now spread its wings in the international market with exhibitions in New Jersey and Dubai.

In an interview, Tarun explains how he started his business, the response that prompted him to expand the company, and his vision for the wedding industry.

How did you first hit upon the idea for the Vivaha exhibition?  It’s not an idea that would normally occur to anyone.

The idea of the exhibition came after seeing the positive response to the magazine. Seeing people react so positively to the magazine because it gave them wedding solutions, I thought, ‘Why not have a platform where people can shop for the entire wedding including venue, catering and other wedding related services under one roof?’ Since a wedding is such a happy occasion, why not make wedding shopping a happy affair as well, where people don’t have to go market to market or city to city struggling to look for the right product?

What was the response to your first exhibition?

Overwhelming, to say the least. We had a 3 km traffic jam outside Taj Palace hotel where the first show took place. People were buying in a frenzy. There came Celebrating Vivaha exhibitiona point when we even had to stop people from entering for almost half an hour till the rush inside the hall subsided a bit. In the initial years, the footfalls of 25,000 visitors (which were numbers unheard of in those days) redefined the exhibition market in the capital. In future years, the same happened in the main metropolises where similar visitor numbers made the exhibitions successful.

Which city or part of India has the most interested Indians?
Indians love to shop and weddings are occasions where they shop maximum (sic). So it is difficult to pin point any one particular city. But having said that, North India for sure has a distinct quality when we talk about shopping. They are impulsive buyers and buy without blinking an eye if they find something to their liking.

What are some of the points to remember when putting up a great exhibition?

A good wedding exhibition is one which has all categories related to the wedding segment. So instead of concentrating only on clothing and jewellery, one should see that there is everything one may need – from make-up artists to caterers, photographers, wedding planners, decorators, wedding venues and honeymoon destinations.

What are some of the points that will ruin an exhibition?

Lack of advertising. You may have the best brands exhibiting with you but till you don’t advertise to tell people you are putting up something unique, all your efforts are in vain.

What are clients looking for when they hire you?

Our clients look for a platform where they will be able to showcase and sell their products to their clients as well as the aspirational TG they work towards.

If somebody wishes to follow in your footsteps today, what advice would you give him/her?

Treat the exhibition seriously – don’t take it as a short term project where you sell booths and think your job is done. Your job is only done when you pull in the crowd which will make the exhibitors happy and pull in the exhibitors which will make the crowd happy.

What makes JNU special?

A new book on the making of JNU details its history, inception and the campus life of a bygone era.

Every time I visit the sprawling campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University, I have wondered why people have ever moved outside it. It is a wonderful place, and is well-connected, too. There is less chaos and more greenery, complete with well-defined roads that lead you to your destination without confusion.

To a casual visitor, the JNU campus is an extension of a dreamy academic getaway, set in calm environs. Sure, the calm is somewhat shattered by stray dogs holding forth at every corner and road crossing, but otherwise, the place is heavenly.

Many like me have often wondered what it is about JNU that makes it stand out from others. If you’ve wondered the same thing, it might be a good time to pick up this new book, JNU: The Making of A University, by JNU academic Dr Dr Rakesh BatabyalRakesh Batabyal (in pic on right). It carries a new insight into the very inception of this university and shines a light on lesser-known truths.

I ask Dr Batabyal why he decided to put together this book. He says, “I do not know at what point of time I began writing this book. It was most probably the words of a dear colleague, Richa Malhotra that motivated me to look deeper into the university whose air I breathed every day.”

He adds that he realised that the university required a “special historiographical treatment” as his research progressed. “A historian’s account, I realised, needed to be approximate to that larger canvas of the institution and at the same time, not allowing little histories to be treated merely as reflections of real big entities.”

Last week, at a discussion on this volume at the India International Centre, many unknown facts about JNU came to the fore. We learnt about the first vice chancellor, to the then political ideologies, the campus life of those times. However, the history of the university is captured only till about 1989. Since that is the year that Dr Batabyal had joined JNU, he probably did not want his personal views to trickle into the text.

The award season is upon us already, but this is one award that is worth your while.

The Apeejay-Karmayuga ‘Karmaveer Chakra 2014-15’ Award for exceptional work for senior citizens is inviting nominations from Indian individuals working in the field of elder care. The award was instituted in 2011 and is a highly prestigious prize. The Award is promoted by iCONGO and Silver Innings Foundation; both organisations work with the elderly in India.

To be eligible for the award, the entrant must be an Indian or a person of Indian origin, he or she must be currently working on a project for elder care for a minimum of three years, or be a social entrepreneur in the field. Those working in the field as volunteers are preferred.

The Award will be given at a ceremony in Delhi on March 21, 2015. Last date for applying is December 20, 2014.
