Disaster preparedness training currently underway in Mumbai

Drastic climate change and changing weather patterns are attributed to rise in natural disasters, SNDT University is hosting the programme.

Observing that drastic climate change and changing weather patterns have increased the frequency and intensity of disasters in recent years, State Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao recently called for improving institutional and community preparedness to limit the damage caused by such disasters.

Recalling the instances of the earthquake in Nepal, floods in Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand, the Malin tragedy near Pune and the unseasonal rains in Maharashtra, the Governor said every organisation and housing society should have a functioning disaster management system in place. He added that there should be a regulator to monitor and certify the readiness of an institution to tackle disaster.

The Governor was speaking after inaugurating a training programme on disaster preparedness ‘Avhan’ at Birla Matishree Sabhagriha in Mumbai on Monday,  25 May, 2015.

The SNDT Women’s University is hosting the programme this year. In all, 1,050 NSS volunteers and 70 programme officers from all parts of the State will undergo the 10-day training programme to be conducted by the National Disaster Response Force in Mumbai during May 25 and 3 June, 2015.

Stating that community is the first responder in any disaster situation, the Governor expressed the need for creating awareness among citizens through disaster management education and training. The Governor called for inculcating disaster responsive public behaviour among the people.

Vice Chancellor Vasudha Kamat delivered the welcome address while State Liaison officer of the National Service Scheme Dr Atul Salunke apprised the gathering about the training programme.

Attend: Kiran Nagarkar presents ‘Bedtime Story’

Noted author of ‘Ravan and Eddie’ will read his famous story, and screenplay ‘Black Tulip’ this evening at Kala Ghoda.

If you like writer Kiran Nagarkar’s work, you will certainly want to be at Max Mueller Bhavan, Kala Ghoda, this evening.

Nagarkar will launch and read out excerpts from his controversial play Bedtime Story, which, playwrights say is “a very disturbing play – and that in an era of theatre when it is very hard to disturb audiences.” The play was written in 1982 and Nagarkar found it extremely hard to get it staged because of its controversial, experimental content. The story of the play is a retelling of the Mahabharata, in which the reader is presented with the Pandavas as flawed heroes with follies, and the Kauravas as only marginally worse. The choice, then, is between what is dark and what is darker. After the play’s content was censored and actors became afraid to be a part of the project, it was first performed in 1995 in Mumbai.

The writer will also launch the screenplay of Black Tulip, at the same event. He will be in conversation with senior journalist Srinivasan Jain about the many issues his two works raise.

Security, rights and civil liberties for women

The US Consulate General, Mumbai, is hosting a panel discussion by women working in security, this evening at Mumbai Central.

Women’s safety, security and the safeguarding of their fundamental rights are all being frequently discussed all over the world currently, given the fact that several incidents that go against these rights are taking place globally.

The US Consulate General, Mumbai, is shining a spotlight on these issues this evening with a panel discussion on ‘Women security in India: Understanding your legal and civil rights’. The talk is being hosted as part of the month-long Women’s History Month being celebrated in the United States, and will be facilitated by writer and activist Aarefa Johari.

Panelists for the talk include Tiffany Williams, acclaimed human trafficking and labour rights specialist for the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), Audrey D’Mello, Programme Director at Majlis, Insia Dariwala, writer, director and child sexual abuse activist, and Shalini Sharma, police inspector with the Mumbai Police.

World Snooker Championships kick off in Mumbai today

Lovers of snooker, rejoice! The Indian Open Snooker Championships, a World Ranking event, kick off in Mumbai today.

The event was formally inaugurated yesterday by State of Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, who also played the opening shot. The event is to be held over two days – March 10 and 11, 2015 – at Hotel Grand Hyatt. Over 50 national and international snooker players, including Indian great Pankaj Advani, will participate in the prestigious event.

Advani was also part of the inauguration team yesterday, which comprised of Jason Ferguson, Chairman, WPBSA, and Capt PVK Mohan, President, Billiards and Snooker Federation of India.

The art exhibition titled ‘Timeless Energy – An Art Connect’ is conceptualised by eight women, alumni of Sophia College, 1979 batch.

There’s nothing quite like art to make one muse on the deeper complexities of life. Eight artists from the 1979 batch of Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai are celebrating the upcoming International Women’s Day (March 8) with an art exhibition commemorating the spirit of women.

The exhibition, titled ‘Timeless Energy – An Art Connect’, aims to “celebrate the spirit of art and creativity and support women empowerment with an ingenious exhibition of art.” The three-day event starting February 27 is a prelude to the forthcoming International Women’s Day.

The participating artists are Parveen Antia Hemmady, Aneeta Malhotra, Rupande Kaku, Jasmine Jehangir, Shefali Randeria, Krishna Khanna, Qamar Ahmad, and Lili Menon.

‘Timeless Energy’ is an art show of free spirited expression, presented by an art connects between the eight female artists, all alumni of Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai, 1979 batch. The creative energy that flows through their art is presented by bold strokes, colour blocks, textures and interesting treatments of varied mediums on surfaces from canvas to fabric, wood, glass and porcelain.

‘Please welcome…Jerry Seinfeld!’

Noted comedian Jerry Seinfeld comes to Mumbai for the first time in March 2015, tickets will be sold tomorrow onward.

It’s a great time to be a comedy enthusiast in Mumbai. Entertainment icon Jerry Seinfeld is making his maiden trip to Mumbai in March 2015 with two shows at the NSCI, Worli.

Incidentally, the same venue was where the infamous AIB Roast took place in December last year.

Seinfeld is a name almost synonymous with comedy. Over the last few decades, it is a name that has reached unsurpassed heights of global popularity. And this March, fans in India will have a long-awaited opportunity to experience his work live.

Jerry Seinfeld The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning comedian will perform two live shows next month on March 14 and 15 at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium, NSCI. These shows mark Jerry Seinfeld’s first ever performances in Asia. Seinfeld said “I have always been fascinated by India and its culture.  I have great respect for its people and their way of life.  It is a great honour for me to be invited to come there and make fun of it in person.”

He joins the line-up of the already underway Stage42 festival, which showcases some of India and the world’s most celebrated artists and experiences in comedy, music, theatre and food. “For many of us, our introduction to comedy was Seinfeld. He’s a comedian whose influence is impossible to understate, and it’s a matter of immense pride that we will be bringing this global icon to India for the first time,” says Arjun Ravi, Co-Founder , NH7.in

The festival will take place in seven cities – Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune – between February and March 2015. The comedy lineup of the festival includes the Russell Peters Almost Famous World Tour, a tour by critically-acclaimed comic Bill Burr, and Pretentious Nights featuring the guys behind the popular YouTube series Pretentious Movie Reviews.

Tickets to the Jerry Seinfeld shows go on sale at noon on February 13, and are priced at Rs 7,500. Tickets will be available for sale on Insider.in.

Apart from the multiple award winning TV show Seinfeld, Seinfeld has also starred in, written and produced movies (Comedian, Bee Movie), directed and produced a Broadway hit (Colin Quinn Long Story Short), and even wrote a best-selling book (Seinlanguage) and a children’s book (Halloween).
